The 2021 season is reaching its end. While some players are focused on the battle for the Summoners’ Cup, others will be grinding some more League of Legends for the last chance to get this year’s Prestige skins.

The latest addition to the collection is the Nightbringer Kayn Prestige Edition, available in the LoL Worlds 2021 Pass Bundle for 2650 Riot Points. That’s not the only way to get the Shadow Reaper’s golden skin, however: players can also unlock it with 2000 tokens from the Worlds event.

While the first idea of Prestige Point skins was to make them feel special, the initial price of around $100 made it a pay-to-earn skin, and the special aspect was hardly anywhere to be seen. Following plenty of negative feedback from the community, Riot changed the model and started allowing players to obtain Prestige skins with event tokens as well, to extend their reach.

Even if 2021 is coming to a close, fans could still expect some Prestige skins in the near future. In an article released earlier this year, Riot announced that both Volibear and Brand will get a Prestige skin for a new skin within the year. 

Here’s what you need to know about all the Prestige skins in League.

List of Prestige skins and ways to acquire them

Prestige skins can either be unlocked with Prestige Points or acquired with event tokens during specific events. Players can’t get Prestige Skins from Chests, but they can obtain Prestige Points from Masterwork Chests. Some bundles also feature Prestige Points as a bonus.

Current problems with the Prestige skin line

After each year, the Prestige Points that a player earned in that year are reset. Riot said the intent behind this is to prevent players from stocking up on points for the next year’s skins and to avoid making them more common on release day. Riot previously announced there will be special Prestige Point shops at the end of a year to allow players to spend their Prestige Points so that they don’t disappear in vain. This demotivates players who purchase battle passes toward the middle of the year, though. They won’t have enough Prestige Points for a skin and will have to wait for the shop at the end of the year to use their Points.

“Prestige skins are about taking an existing skin and adding rarity and desirability through more expensive-looking (and often sparkly!) materials in the model and VFX as well as the ways you can get the skin,” Riot’s lead producer of skins Carlos “IAMCARLOS” Giffoni said in an “Ask Riot” thread at the beginning of the year.

In another statement, Riot later announced “2020 Prestige Points will extend through the end of 2021”. Players who, by the end of the year, will have finalized all 2020 and 2021 Event Pass milestone missions will have received a total of 400 Prestige Points. 

Future improvements

“Back in March, we said our rare and exclusive content update was still targeting later in 2021,” said Adriaan Noordzij, product manager at Riot, in an announcement. “ Some of the folks working on this update have moved onto other teams (…) it means we’re pushed back again into 2022.”

Further in the blog post, Riot declared its intention with this “exclusive content update,” saying it was “eager to tell” fans its plans. Since the prestige skins are classified as “mythic,” the update will be called “Mythic Content Overhaul.”

Within this overhaul, Gemstones and Hextech skins will upgrade by transitioning them to a new in-game currency and “releasing more exclusive content for [the new currency].” The new system for Mythic content will also include a way for players to unlock a Prestige skin without having to pay money for it. 

If the current system doesn’t reward effort as much as fans hoped for, the new one will likely satisfy players who demanded a change in the Prestige system. We could expect a system of grinding combined with a focus on mastering the champion that would make the skins feel more rewarding and desirable.

The final Prestige Point shop will open this December, where players will have access to all the Prestige Skins of 2020 and 2021.
